BURT crane & rigging History

Trace our logo and know our history...

Burt crane & rigging History (15009 bytes)We trace our history back four generations to the slate quarries on the Vermont-New York border near Granville, Original Logo (1478 bytes)NY. The great grandfather of our owner, Bill Scheib, was a contractor who gained notoriety for his capabilities erecting the tall derricks used in the quarries. This type of project forms the basis of our original logo.

Bill’s grandfather learned from his father and continued in the trade growing into a well-known rigger and house mover. He became quite a legend for his capabilities using only horses and block and tackle. In later years, he did use trucks, but as story has it, refused to use a crane to the end.

Bill’s uncles grew up in the business as their father had, utilizing their in-born abilities and learning the trade. Realizing growth of the business was limited in the rural area, Bill Scheib’s uncle, John M. Mullins moved to Troy, New York and, in time, began his own The Logo evolves (1960 bytes)business which today bears his name. John Mullins grew his business owning the largest cranes and trucks of his era performing the largest, most involved rigging and erecting projects. Our logo evolves, adding the big crane representing the previous generation of our family.

Our logo is completed when we bring in today’s generation, Bill Scheib; his BURT crane & rigging Logo (3029 bytes)nickname is Burt. He too worked for the previous generation and then set out on his own. His father helped him realize an education to be of paramount importance in today’s world and he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating as a Mechanical Engineer. Bill went to work for Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, one of the foremost, progressive, most efficient fabricators and erectors in the world. While there, he progressed rapidly to field foreman on projects ranging from oil refineries in Far East Asia to nuclear power plants in the United States.

Tiring of the travel, Bill moved to Vermont and, after working for others in the housing industry, began his own contracting business performing any job he could find.

Burt Crane & Rigging has grown from those humble beginnings to a company that has produced rigging and erecting projects with contract values over one million dollars.

We are well known for our safe efficient methods, utilizing our resources in the most progressive, intelligent manner possible.
